August 7 - October 31, 2008 Implant UBS Art Gallery, 1285 Avenue of the Americas, New York, NY This exhibition, curated by Jodie Jacobson, The Horticultural Society of New York’s Curator, has selected artists whose subject matter is plants, and is based on the idea presented in Michael Pollan’s book Botany of Desire. Adapted to the artistic world, this would mean that the plant has found a way to engender personal relationships with humans, thereby immortalizing itself in art. ASBA members Jim Sams and Carol Woodin, as well as about 20 other artists and photographers, will be included. Contact: Jodie Jacobson, PH: 212.757.0915, e-mail: jjacobson@hsny.org |

Pancrace Bessa and the Golden Age of French Botanical Illustration Hunt Institute for Botanical Documentation, Carnegie Mellon University, Pittsburgh, PA A selection of watercolors and prints by the French botanical artist Pancrace Bessa (17721846). In this golden age of natural history science, many new plants arrived in France to be cultivated in the botanical gardens of the Muséum de Histoire Naturelle, of the royals and of the aristocracy. These new plants required classification, description and illustration. Bessa painted flowers and fruits for some of the most important collections and botanical publications of the early 19th century, taught painting and exhibited at the Paris Salon. Bessa was hired as a peintre des fleurs to portray rare plants for the famous collection of vélinsthe paintings on vellum begun in the mid-17th century for Gaston d’Orleans, inherited by Louis XIV and transferred to the Jardin du Roithat was nationalized and renamed the Muséum de Historie Naturelle in 1793. The Muséum was an internationally recognized center for research in the natural sciences with a staff of the leading French botanists and artists and a strong relationship with the Académie Royale des Sciences in Paris. September 13 November 9, 2008 Portraits of a Garden IV Brooklyn Botanic Garden, 1000 Washington Avenue, Brooklyn, New York Gallery talks with curator Patricia Jonas and artists: September 27 and October 18 Steinhardt Conservatory Gallery, The fourth biennial exhibition of all new work by Florilegium Society artists features 35 paintings and drawings of Brooklyn Botanic Garden’s living collections. Without negating its art historic legacy or letting poetry swamp science, this exhibition is distinguished by work that is exceptionally fresh. Margaret Farr and Monika de Vries Gohlke put their experience of time and place in their exuberant plant portraits: Farr’s branch of the shamelessly flouncy Kanzan cherry is showered with falling pink petals the essence of Brooklyn Botanic Garden’s Cherry Esplanade at its peak moment and de Vries Gohlke’s single, luminous Spanish bluebell is accompanied by a small landscape of the enchanted Bluebell Wood painted as if it were a photo mounted in a scrapbook an allusion to all of the visitors who take home souvenir photos of Bluebell Wood. Artists represented in the exhibition are Francesca Anderson, Harriet Carotenuto, John Cody, Christina Davis, Nan Dedrick, Jean Emmons, Margaret Farr, Monika de Vries Gohlke, Gertrude Hamilton, Carol Hamilton, Paul Harwood, Wendy Hollender, Gina Ingoglia, Judith Kunhardt, Libby Kyer, Dianne McElwain, Angela Mirro, Kate Nessler, Derek Norman, George Olson, Rose Pellicano, Kelly Radding, Dick Rauh, Eleanor Lea Rohrbaugh, Mary Ryniec, Manabu Saito, Constance Sayas, Jessica Tcherepnine and Catherine Watters. Exhibitions are central to the ASBA's mission. They contribute to our professional development, both as individuals and as a group; they serve as an important educational tool, and they are the way in which we spread the word about botanical art. The ASBA's Exhibitions Coordinator provides assistance, consistency, support, professionalism, and guidance for those who are organizing international, national, regional or local exhibitions. The Exhibitions Coordinator is a part-time position. An ideal exhibition is one developed by participants from any area of the nation. Members identify themselves to the Exhibitions Coordinator as interested in and willing to work on an exhibition in their region. Our goal is to mount three shows annually in diverse regions of the country. The Exhibitions Coordinator will provide the necessary information and support to make your exhibition a success. The ASBA has published a set of Exhibition Guidelines which provide a comprehensive how-to guide for planning and holding an exhibition. We have a great deal of experience in mounting exhibitions, and we all benefit from that experience. If you think you'd like to hold an ASBA exhibition, and you have a venue in mind, the ASBA would like to encourage you. Please look over the Exhibitions Guidelines to learn how to go about it, and contact: Carol Woodin, Exhibitions Coordinator at ASBAExhibitions@aol.com or Jean Emmons, Exhibitions Chair at jean.emmons@gte.net.
